LECOFISH stands for the use of local ecological knowledge which contributes to the ecosystem approach in a sustainable fisheries management. This project is funded by the Belgian Science Policy for 2 years and will be carried out by the Maritime Institute of Ghent University.
Through the SPSD II projects, GAUFRE and BALANS it has become clear that there exists knowledge gaps related to fisheries in the Belgian part of the North Sea (BPNS). This is in light of the fact ICES data does not sufficiently provide geographical information needed for a well-balanced fisheries management that takes into account local ecosystem processes in the BPNS. This does not mean that there is no local ecosystem information. However, the problem stems from the fact that the existing information gathered by the experts through their personal experience is not easily accessible for the scientific community or the wider public.
